Building on Faith
Meet Walter and Judy Martens from Abbotsford, British Columbia. They found themselves at a stage in life with some flexible time, and committed to serve in Thailand with MB Mission for 3 months.
Driving in Thailand is a constant adventure: “A Harley wouldn’t cut it here… a scooter is where it’s at!” Meet Walter and Judy Martens from Abbotsford, British Columbia. They found themselves at a stage in life with some flexible time, and committed to serve in Thailand with MB Mission for 3 months. Walter employs his construction expertise to oversee a construction project and Judy shares her gift of hospitality while hosting visitors in their temporary home.
Walter has risen to the challenge when it comes to working with completely different construction methods and techniques “My job here is to get the work started,” explains Walter. “Still, you have to work in a culturally-sensitive way... and that means waiting. It’s kind of a work in progress… You learn a lot about yourself. You need to be flexible and have patience.”
Whether taking Thai kids on outings, preaching in local churches or riding their scooter on chaotic streets, Judy and Walter are continually encouraged to rely on the Lord. They appreciate the support and encouragement from long-term MB missionaries working in this region, like Ricky and Karen Sanchez.
Ricky, the country team leader, invites you to consider how you can use your skills and gifts to serve God in the world-wide Mennonite Brethren family. Pray about it today!
