November 2017

Next week, the Canadian Mennonite Brethren conference is gathering in Abbotsford, BC for a study conference called EQUIP on the theme of disciple making. It’s looking like the largest attendance for any MB conference in many years. Disciple making is at the heart of our understanding of Christ’s One Mission call to the Church. That’s why it’s also one of the three core commitments that our USMB churches have rallied around.

Yesterday, in a time of intercession for these meetings, we were humbling ourselves before the Lord and crying out to him for his Bride, the Church. We were repenting on behalf of the Church for how offenses taken can be buried rather than healed, and how sexual sin in particular makes us fearful and sometimes angry. These entanglements and weights take our eyes off of Jesus and keep us from his mission. The Lord’s encouraging word to us came from Hebrews 12:5-7: “And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?”

Discipline and disciple making are connected. The outcome is a “harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11). We long for a greater harvest here in the western Church, but are we willing to pray the price? We long for a Church that lives the mission of Jesus, but do we really know what it takes?

This morning, I was not surprised when God brought a church leader into my office to pray for the exact entanglements and weights we had interceded for yesterday. The Lord is speaking, and we look forward to what he will be saying to us collectively next week.

Prayer Requests

  • Please pray for the EQUIP conference next week, that God would speak as MB leaders from across Canada gather - we are praying for this harvest of righteousness.
  • Please pray for all of our missionaries in Latin America, who are gathering for a retreat in mid-November. Pray they would be encouraged and equipped during this time.
  • Pray for our missionaries who are dealing with health issues, that they would experience God's healing and his presence with them.

Physical slavery is prevalent around the world; it takes many forms. Individuals and people groups are in bondage. Guest speaker, Randy Friesen has seen the amazing power of the Gospel to bring freedom to the oppressed. In our own lives, we can find ourselves enslaved – to sin and to fear. How can we be free? Knowing who we are in Christ is vital to our freedom.
