Seizing the Moment

During Carnaval – an annual festival four days before Ash Wednesday – the TREK team to Brazil took the initiative to hold a retreat for youth at the newly completed Adventure Camp an hour outside of Sao Paulo.

The camp, where the TREKers spent several months doing construction, is a two fold project: a retreat center for pastors, missionaries, and church teams, and a camping ministry for youth, children, couples, and families. Jim and Marilou Nightingale, missionaries serving with MB Mission are heading up this project.

The retreat proved to be a success, with 30-35 Brazilian youth filling the camp for the weekend. The theme of the retreat was living simply, and the location of the camp – rustic and removed from the city – spoke into that theme. The TREKers’ prayer for the retreat weekend was that they would have the opportunity to speak into the lives of the youth and delve deeper into relationship with them.

The retreat ended well, but the fruit of that weekend was still to come. Next week at church, Rafael, a 17 year old who had attended the camp, told the group of TREKers how that weekend affected his life in a huge way.

When Rafael arrived home on Sunday night, all he wanted to do was go to sleep. Unfortunately for him, his father was hosting a BBQ. He felt it would be rude to go straight to bed, so he decided to make the rounds and greet his friends and neighbors.

The small talk turned into a conversation about how he spent his Carnaval weekend. Rafael started talking about the retreat at the Adventure Camp and the things that he learned there. In a matter of time he had a large group surrounding him, listening intently. Rafael took hold of this opportune moment to share the truth of Jesus Christ. By the end of the night, 7 people had entered into God’s family!

The TREK team was encouraged to know that although they weren’t directly involved in leading anyone to Christ, that retreat weekend had an enormous impact not only on the youth involved but on many others as well. Praise God for prompting Rafael to seize that moment and share the truth! Pray for these 7 new Christians as they begin their walk of faith.
